Document apostille

For countries party to the Hague Convention

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a simplified certification that authenticates the origin of a public document. It is recognised across all countries party to the 1961 Hague Convention (over 120 countries worldwide).

Countries where an apostille applies:

GermanyAustraliaAustriaBelgiumCanadaChinaSpainUnited StatesItalyJapanNetherlandsPortugalUnited KingdomSwitzerlandSaudi ArabiaPhilippinesMorocco... and over 120 other countries

💡 💡 **Benefit:** A streamlined process — a single certificate covers authenticity across all member states.

Document legalization

For countries not party to the Hague Convention

What is legalization?

Legalization is a more extensive procedure that authenticates a public document: in France the route goes through the notarial network and the competent centre — including the Paris Legalization and Apostille Centre (CLAP) in the Paris region when the file requires it — then the embassy or consulate of the destination country, depending on the documents.

Countries typically requiring legalization:

AlgeriaCambodiaUnited Arab EmiratesLaosLebanonQatarSyriaVietnam... and other non-member countries

⚠️ ⚠️ **Important:** The French chain plus consular step often takes several weeks; actual timing is indicative and depends on the document, notarial processing, the CLAP when applicable, and the diplomatic post.
